can placostamus and snails be in the same tank (10 gallon) since they are both considered "cleaners"?

if so,,,,what are the water requirements for these? right now i have my tank at 75 degrees. what should the average water temperature be for freshwater fish?
 
I keep my water at around 76-79 degrees F. I don't think you should mix those two cleaners because there might not be enough food to go around.
 
how far along should a tank be to add a plocostumus or snail? should i buy algae pellets or what should be used so they don't starve?
 
The Plecostomus most people refer to is the Common Pleco, which will outgrow your tank. I'd just go with the snails for a 10g.
 
agree with girlie, for most fishkeepers, plecos (at least common plecos, which comprises 95% of pet store plecos) are nothing but trouble...they can\get huge, are very messy and can get agressive as they age/grow. If you have a pleco return it and tell the LFS folks to stop giving you bad info on what can be kept in a 10g!! You can have as many snails as you want as long as you consider them in the bio load of the tank and provide them with adequate food. Actually, one or 2 big snails and just a couple of fish can make for quite a strikng tank!:)
 
in one of the posts above the one you answered, i asked the question about feeding. when it comes to snails,,,,,,should i buy algae pellets or do i let them eat anything left over from the food? if i have some small snails i don't want them to starve. how do i make sure they have enough food
 
Not an expert on snail food, but they need there own food, or enough food that they have a chance to get to it before/after the fish. They definately don't get by (:at least not for long) on leftovers. They should basically be considered and counted as one of the fish. My fish love cucumber and I would always catch the snail I had attached to what I put in the next day after the fish lost interest. I don't think algae pellets are enough, but I'm no snail expert:)
 
thank you holly 9937, cucumber? do you mush it up, or do you place a slice in the tank? can a container of "tropical fish food" be enough for all freshwater fish????? like snails,,,how do i know if there is enough food in the tank that he won't die?
 
I've never had much luck with snails so I won't offer to much advice, but for the cucumber, I just put in a slice, let the fish go at it and take out whats left after a day or 2. It will float, so you either want to rubber band it to a rock or get a veggie clip (plastic clip with a suction cup). Flakes are a pretty good general food, but it depends on the type of fish, some are carnivores and some like more veggies, like the algae wafers. For my fish I use flakes, wafers, shrimp pellets, and freeze dried baby shrimp, but depends on your fish really. A varied diet is best for any fish and helps them grow and stay healthy
