Hello,
I have a 48 gallon tank I'd like to turn into an amzon themed fish/planted tank. I'd love to get a few angelfish. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find a species database which could lead me to amazonian fish only (I'd like to keep it as natural as possible). I'd also like to get a small school of fish in there, but I'm not sure if that would work with the Angelfish.

I know you all get these stocking questions all the time, but if anyone could point me in the right direction, or if anybody has any advice, it would be greatly appreciated!

www.****************, on the left side there is a section on the amozon river. I don't know if this site is what you are looking for but I hope it helps. Good luck on your biotype! :-)

Angelfish
Silver Dollars
Neon Tetras
Red Pacus
Pirahhnas
Plecos
Rams
Severums
Festivums
Corydoras

Theres a ton more, and some of those might be Central/South American, not just Amazon. Benn a long day, can't remember :duh:

Cardinal tetras
Bleeding heart tetras
Freshwater stingrays (too big for your setup)
Ghost knife-fish
Freshwater "barracudas"
Pike cichlids
Uaru
Hatchetfish (esp. marbled)
Doradid cats (spotted raphaels)
Discus
Apistogramma
Checkerboard cichlids
Pimelodid cats
Rummynosed tetras
... etc...

Thanks everybody for your input.

After reading up on your suggestions, here's a list of what I thought I'd like:
-Angelfish (is it worth getting three, or am I better off with one?)
-Mabled hatchetfish (~6)
-Cardinal tetra (~8)
-Cory's (~6)
-Cuckatoo Dwarf Cichlid (is this too aggressive?)

I'm not sure though if the tetras are too small for the angelfish, but chances are I'll go for a young angelfish anyways. But, can it grow up friendly if raised in this environment?

Also, shuold I be looking at heavily planted, or medium planted? And how many watts per gallon should I be looking for if many fish species from the amzon require some not too bright light?

Thanks again for your input!

Neon tetras and cardinal tetras both come from the amazon. They are small fish and if you get a school of 8 of each species, 5 oto's and 3 angels, that would make a nice community if you like big schools. I have seen a huge school of each kind of tetra and they really do separate into schools.

Well that might be what I would do!

That's a pretty sweet idea. I always thought cardinals and neons are too "related" to form seperate schools. If I buy the angelfish at a young age, I shouldn't have to worry about them feeding on the tetras, right?

Also, would it still work if I replaced the Oto's for Cory's, and added a few marbled hatchetfish? (I'm hoping to add a sump as well, so I shuold have a bit more clearance in temrs of bio-load!)

I will be up to the angels. Once the angels are big enough they may or they may not choose to eat the tetras.
Otto's are algae eaters, cories are not. Cories are great for cleaning up the food that sinks to the bottom. Otto's will keep the plants and glass clean.

Also, I was thinking of adding a sump, but is it possible to have too much water flow in a freshwater aquarium. I'm not going to over do it, but It will need some flow for the water to get back into the display tank? Are there any particular gph rating I should be looking into for a pump for a 48 gallon tank (15 gallon sump)?

Also, is the dwarf cichlid going to work in this tank, maybe I can go for a ram instead, and get 3 corys and 3 otos?

Bump (previous questions) + Revised list

3 Angelfish
5 Hatchetfish
8 Cardinal tetras
8 rummynose tetras
4 Corys
4 Otos
2 cuckatoo dwarf cichlid (or 2 rams)

In a 50 gallon + 15 gallon sump (need gph for sump!)

And is natural looking gravel wiht some areas of sand good for the setup?
