Did you get "aquarium light bulb" or regular light bulb?

Aquarium light bulbs are tend to be softer.

Leave your light on for a little while, my fish goes crazy when I just turn my light on, but after about 30 sec, they seem to settle down just fine.

Btw, what kind of fish do you have? Catfish type species hate lights.

fIsHy13, it's possible your fish are ill. When my platies were affected by internal parasites, they hid whenever the lights were on...most of the time "sitting" very still under plant leaves or hiding in a cave. One platy found the tiniest crevice in my driftwood ornament to squeeze into. Once they were treated and healthy again, they had no trouble with the lights.

hmm...they could be. But it even the new fish that i bought the other day hates the light- how could of gotten ill in a day? If they do have a internal parasite, thne how coem they are showing no other signs of illness? This hating the light thing has gone on for months now, so wouldn't they all be dead by now if they where ill? I'm not saying that you are wrong, but i don't want to chuck aload of medicone in the tank when they are not even ill! If anyone else has any other ideas, please help.

p.s. my fish are mollies, if you wanna know :)

My fish were sick for a long time before I figured out what was wrong, and didn't show outward symptoms...the first sign was that they weren't swimming around as usual, and preferred to hide out all the time. It took a while for them to heal. One fish never really did...ended up pretty deformed from malnourishment.

Now, I didn't say that that was what your fish had. Just suggested it's something for you to consider. It's not typical for mollies to hide from the light.

It is possible that your new fish came with parasites (some fish species often have internal parasites when you buy them.) The tough thing with internal parasites is that it's really hard to diagnose, but treating for them isn't too difficult...some aquarists prophylactically (and periodically) treat their fish for internals with medicated food, especially when new fish are added to the tank.

when the light is off they act like they have a lot of 'vitality' and they are very engergetic, and won't hide anywhere; they love coming up to the glass whenever i'm a round.

but i will ask at my LFS about it to see if they can diagnose the problem if they're is one. I don't trust my LFS though... they always have dead and dying fish in their tanks.

Well, if that's the case, then I wouldn't be surprised if their fish do carry disease. If you don't trust them, then why buy from them?
