Is it natural for fish to swipe the sand with the side of their body's?

you might have ich, but if it stops i would not worry, my yellow labs where doing that for 1 day(only one) then it stoped and never did it again. if the fish is doing it alot i would get worried since that is a sign that it is irratated

I agree - rubbing once in a great while is ok, but continually rubbing could be a sign that some parasite is irritating the fish.

i noticed a while ago that my jack dempsey does that on the sand in his tank. at first i was concerned but found out that its natural. hes been thriving for well over 2 years now. so like was said previously, if he does it alot then its time to worry, if its only once in a great while then he should be fine.

I have greenterrors that are doing it..And a few of my Red's are 2...BUt I see no spots on them... The water temp is at 82. SHould I raise it to 86 and add salt? How much per gallon of water? And for how long?

Can anybody help with this?

It could be many things aside from Ich. I would not suggest raising the temp and adding salt unless you actually see Ich Spots. I suspect it could be something like gill flukes or some other external parasite. If you have a fish store that has Prazi Pro in stock, or some other Praziquantel based medicine, I would suggest that. If they don't have that, look for something from Jungle called Parasite Clear tank buddies. This is a "fizzy tab" medicine that has Praziquantel as a main ingredient. I have even seen this medicine at Wal-Mart, so hopefully someone near you has it. I would follow the directions on the box for dosage. It should clear up any external parasites aside from Ich. If you do start seeing Ich spots, finish the Parasite Clear (it's not a real long term treatment) and then raise the temp and add salt according to Daveedka's article in the articles forum. Good luck, Chard, and let us know how it goes!
