I bought a used 125 gallon with twin Fluval 404's. When I went to look at the tank it only had one unknown 3 inch fish. They did not remenber what it was. We went back 5 hours later and they had taken it down and put the gravel in plastic lined boxes, still moist but not full of water. It took me two weeks to decide where to put it and make room etc.

While i was putting it up I found a leak from one of the filters and did not get the leaks stopped for a week at which time I put the heaters, bubbler, gravel and rocks in. The next day I put 10 zebra danios and 6 fat mollies 2.5 inches long..5 days later I put in 15 more zebras, 8 more mollies and 6 2.5 inch convicts...I have checked my water every 48 hours but have zero ammonia zero nitrites and zero nitrates. I am going to have an all african cichlid tank but used the above mix because they were all on sale for $.39 to $.99 each.

Is it possible the bacteria lived with no heat, water or "food" for the 3 weeks? Is this tank already cycled? I was going to put some gravel from my established 55 gallon tank in a net as soon as I got an ammonia spike, but it does not look like that is going to happen!

I don't think any of you care, but the tank never did have to cycle again. Amonia and nitrites never have gone over 0.25 and it is a nitrate factory. I have had it "fully" stocked with over 50 cichlids for the past two weeks with zero amonia and zero nitrites.

I care. Sorry I didn't see your post earlier.Yes, bacteria can live longer than most folks will give them credit for. Got any pics you can share?

I hope others will benefit from my "restart" of an old tank.

Congratulations on the purchase! Yup, I've bought a couple of used tanks off craigslist and I made sure they were still running so I didn't have to cycle, and it looks like that was your case too. I agree, pics would be awesome ;)

P.S. I haven't been online in weeks but if I had seen your post I'd care too <3

EDIT: Ooops, too late in the pics petition! WOW, that looks fantastic! I love the layout you did with the rocks, and you must have a heck of a backyard to have so many of those beauties!
