Fish In Pairs?

I don't know why, but whenver I buy new fish, I feel like I need to buy two, so they aren't lonely. Is that necessary? Do I suffer from the Noah's Ark syndrome? :D

Depends on the species. Some fish prefer to be in groups--but a pair is not a group. Some fish will not tolerate another, so you'll end up with just one. You might want to research the fish first to determine what grouping they need to thrive--you'll be more successful in the long run this way.

Pairs are usually not necessary but it depends on the type of fish. Tetras and barbs do better in schools. A pair of cichlids may fight while a pair of swordtails may result in a worn out female and are usually better as a trio or with more females.

Thanks! I know the cardinals need to be in a school, but my two platies (not sure about sex of one of them) take fits--sometimes they get along fabulously and now the red one is terrorizing the black one. I have 2 danios and they get along well, but the zebra danio chases my cardinals all the time. Any input would be appreciated.

Danios are also better in a group. 4 or more might take his attention away from the cardinals.

Check out this link, there are pics of three platys. The silver one is a male, the next pic shows a female. Notice the male has a little fin that points backward.

I have 2 males, they bicker, but won't do any serious harm. I would not worry if they're both males. Hope this helps.

Great! Thanks! Do you think I have too many fish right now? 20 gallon:

2 platies
2 danios
3 neon cardinals
1 albino catfish
5 ghost shrimp

I want to get 2 more cardinals--will adding 2 more danios be too much? one LFS says I have too much, another one says I don't.

What type of albino cat? Long whiskers, with large eyes and a long body, or little barbels, smaller eyes, and a taller, thick body? If you have an albino channel cat, you'll want to get rid of it--they get huge, arund 3-4 feet easily, and will eventually eat everything else in your tank. If it's an albino cory, they too do better in small groups.

Danios do better in groups, but they are very, very active fish, and a group of them will disturb the more sedate cardinals. I would pick one of them to build into a group and get rid of the other.

2 zebra danios
albino cat--no whiskers

All of my fish do not exceed 3" each (I checked their size before purchase)

what do you mean when you say "get rid of them"? I definitely want to build up the cardinals.

See if you can trade the danios into the fish store in return for the cardinals.

I would look clse at the catfish. All cats have some sort of whisker/ barbs. Cory catfish will have short ones, but if they are missing that is not good and could mean it is dying.
