I have had a royal gramma in quarantine for about 10 days now. I just noticed it's tail is torn up pretty bad. I have no idea how this could have happened because it is the only fish in quarantine right now.

Could this be a sign of any disease or is it just likely that it scraped itself up somewhere in the aquarium?

Should I add any medication to the tank or will it just heal itself?

Thanks for the help,
Thresa

usually finrot if water parameters aren't good and the fish is stressed (probably from the move) I would treat with melafix just to be sure, it'll at least keep the tail (if it isn't fin rot) from getting an infection.

I think you are right about the fin rot. I got home today and it looks worse. Most of the tail is now gone. Yesterday it just looked like the tail was torn and frayed and today a good portion of the tail is gone. I checked all my water quality parameters including ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, and they were all undetectable. The pH is 8.2, and the temperature is 77 degrees. I bought the melafix and put my first dose in this evening.

I've had the fish in quarantine for about 10 days now...do you think that it had this problem before I got it and just took a while for it to progress, or do you think that it is something that I could have done?

Do you think this will work or do you think it's too late?

Thanks,
Thresa
