the reason I'm in this forum and now a new fish tank owner is my son's school project. Each kid had a two liter soda bottle with the top cut off. Inside were rocks, water, two little mosquito fish, three snails and some anacharis plant. On top of the tank was the top part of the bottle turned upside down. There was netting over the mouth of the bottle which was under the water level. Then there was dirt and plants. It was a complete ecosystem. It came home at the end of September and sat in my kitchen window for two months untouched (somehow it was self contained enough that we didn't feed the fish). When it started to get cold we bought a 2 gallon tank to move the mosquito fish and all their rocks and plants over to (and started feeding them since the planted top part was gone). For Christmas we got a 28 gallon tank which we cycled with the rocks and filter from the 2 gallon. Those two little fish are still kicking and now they have 7 long finned leopard Danios in with them. In a few weeks we'll add 4 corys, then a small school of Rasboras and one Dwarf Gourami to finish it out.
That little school project has turned into a new hobby for our whole family. Good luck.
That is a great story Timymity. I wouldn't mind sending for some fish with a responcible student at the end of the school year. Especially if the have parents as interested as you.
My Science teacher has a big 4 foot tank in one of the labs. It has 1 bristol shubunkin in it named terry! lol Im going to buy him some butterfly plecos, cause im in charge of the tank!! lol cleaning feeding etc...
Well I can borrow a 20 Gal long from another teacher, and I am excited about getting started. I am still up for suggestion. If you have ideas for how to make the tank look natural let me know.
