This morning my cichlids were all alive and well and when I came home tonight from work I noticed one was laying dead at the bottom of the tank and he was missing an eye.

My guess is that he was beat up and killed by another fish, is that correct? Or could it be something else?

First thing that I'll do is check my water parameters (Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate readings). You should also consider that maybe the fish died first before someone popped his eye out. How are the other fish behaving? Good luck :)

Cichlids are crazy fish, they may live together for years and one day(Bam) Killing spree. But i agree i would check the water, they will eat a fish that dies on its own. I had a Green terror die ,choked on a large rock he for some reason had to eat.

lots of fish eat the dead fish, its good protine for them they go nuts. prob just died from stress of some sort. check all your params and then concider moving your rocks around a bit if it looks like someone is stressed
