fish legislation

the new legislation are to include dogs, cats, cattle, horses, pigs, sheep, guinea pigs, lizards and rhinoceroses...

I guess I can't move to Swizerland with my Rhino.

Great idea overall, but how on earth did rhinos get thrown in?!

Because there is that one guy everyone knows that has that one animal that no one else has. In the swiss country he must have a rhino.:lipssealedsmilie:

By making it a law it brings awareness to the issue. I think that THAT is why it was done.

From September 1st 2008, it will be illegal in Switzerland to flush a fish down the toilet, or freeze it, as a form of euthanasia.

I'm glad a government can see that this is NOT the way to euthanize a fish. Let's not let this be suggested on our forums anymore.

Ya, I wondered the same thing.

As for all the posts about how would such a law be enforced; Law abiding Swiss mentality aside, no perhaps they cannot go door to door and check everyone's fish to ensure compliance so not every offender obviously will be caught and no it will not stop offences. But at the same time, there are laws here in North America to protect cats and dogs and they do not eliminate cases of abuse. What the law WILL do is make it possible to penalize people if they are caught, however that may be. If someone is found to be abusing a dog, be it physical or otherwise, there are penelties in place to deal with that person. However, as it stands, if animal control is called into a home and there is a dog not being fed, they can lay charges. If there are 5 cats locked in a box and not cared for, they can press charges. But if they find a 20 gallon aquarium with 10 goldfish, 6 pirahnas and 50 tetras, and half of them dead...there is nothing really they can do. A law like this would give them the authority to lay charges for "fish cruelty" which as I understand they currently wouldn't be able to do.
Also, who hasn't walked into a fish store somewhere, looked at the conditions the tanks are kept in and thought "omg this is bad". As others have mentioned, if nothing else this law would go along way to enforcing better conditions in some pet/fish stores, even if they can't control what happens once they are sold.

all this makes me wonder how long before it it cruel to catch and eat fish.

Is it illegal to eat dogs and cats in the US? I always forget.

Honestly, I don't think it works that way. Nobody is going to ban eating any animal because it is cruel. However, any pet that someone has should be researched on and well taken care of. My only beef is the fact that some things are debated, and I don't know if the law will take that into account.

I have to agree with what was previously said about the US mentality. Also, the myths about fish being simply mechanical things that swim about and look nice sometimes need to be eradicated. Even if they are simpler, they are intelligent(some more than others) and they have needs that should be met.

Hmmm, somehow I think some authority would be called if you served up your dog or cat at your barbeque. I don't think the same could be said if you served up your tank raised fish.
Unfortunately, in the US at least, most people are ignorant of ANY animal they don't own. There are ALOT of people who buy exotic pets without researching their needs. I think the announcement of the intention to prosecute people who intentionally are cruel to their fish or reptiles by inappropriate husbandry would draw awareness from the public that they should always research before they buy. It doesn't necessarily need to be enforced to make a difference.

Funny you'd ask. I was asking that in chat yesterday myself. How did the rhino end up there? Surely, no one can keep an animal that big and ramming anything.:lipssealedsmilie:
