I recently read that marine fish in captivity have a short lifespan, just a few months or a couple years... is this true?

Depends on what size of aquarium they are in and how well you can take care of them. I have kept SW fish for 5-6 years by keeping up a simple routine of water changes and water testing. The #1 cause of fish death is inexperience and impatience.
