fish lights

I recently had a 15 watt strip flourescent in my tank (no plants--and still measuring no nitries but that is beside the point) and am worried that it might have too much UV because my fish's eyes had bands of read around them. So, I took the light out and am wondering what kind of light is safe and how can I tell that a light is of the right spectrum when I am shopping?

I wouldnt worry about to much UV if I were you. I had to buy a special high output uv strip for my bearded dragon (lizard) and that still is no where nere as much as the sun puts out in a day. Anyways if you have a glass/plastic cover for your lights then that will filter out mst of the uv anyways.

well could there be any other reason for the red bands in the eye? I also found them to be generally less active when the light was on.

It's normal for some fish to have "red" eyes, or bands of "red" around the eyes....

a few drops of visine will clear that right up ....
