Fish Nazi at LFS

Lol

Good story mate- I had it the other way around when I was first starting to get into fish I thought the guy there was helpful because he seemed so to know so much aboutthe fish but he always seemed to to make me buy the more expensive thing. EXAMPLE- " So your looking for a little cool fish to go with your angels, well DONT go with neons as they will get eaten(actually true advice here) but I got a really cool little guy here thats more pricey but well worth it." I ended up going home with a dwarf puffer that terrorized my angels to death gave the puffer away to a friend and still got pushed around by this salesman for a while until I hardly went to the fish store. Luckily about 6 months ago the guy got canned so now it is just the owner and a few helpers that all seem really nice. MUCH better atmosphere in the store and I feel a lot better about spending my money there.

Okay, I'm gonna try to explain this the best way I can.

Nazi has nothing to do with WW2 or what happened. It was the term giving to the National Socialist German Workers' Party, founded in Germany in 1919 and brought to power in 1933 under Adolf Hitler. They are a person that, most likely is adherent to Nazism, or a form of socialism featuring racism and expansionism.

Therefore calling someone a Fish Nazi, or soup Nazi means you don't know what you are talking about and are using the term to sound cool.

i have read in many articles that tetras do not go with rainbows. maybe the kid was right. maybe you just had luck that your tetras and rainbows did not attck each other before, but you could have taken this situation in another direction instead of becoming arrogant yourself. the kid was just doing his job. many people here state that not many lfs employees do not have much knowledge but yet when one give an opinion you want to be an a$$ about it. you should have just said thank you for the advice and walked away. do you really feel happy that you got credit for just being hardheaded or very full of yourself. i dont think that anything to be proud of. :fairy:

I don't think they are trying to use the term to sound cool. I think they are using the term loosely. I have studied Nazis and the rise and fall of the party and yes Nazi is a very harsh term that offends some, but I don't think that it is being used to be "cool". Terms now have double meanings. Like the word g@y. It used to mean happy now it means something totally different.

The kid had no tact. If he has some aquaria knowledge in his head, he should learn how to share it without offending people or find a job away from the public.

ummm... I think you mighta been a little harsh on the kid, Rob.... I mean, sure, the kid shouldn't have assumed you didn't know what you were doing and arrogantly said he wasn't selling you the fish because they were incompatible, and cut the warranty and all that..... but you also shoulda given him a break....it's not every employee that wants to offer any stocking suggestions other than trying to throw the fish at you regardless of what they are...he should have instead had a conversation with you about the fish such as "you have neons and rainbows and it works? and then he could have said I didn't think it was a compatible mix.... voila, educational conversation. You could have explained that you have been in the hobby long enough to know that they are ok as a match, that they are in harmony in your tank already. If he went on, I then would have stated the part about you going since 1999, "if you have a problem with my buying these Tetras, by all means, take it up with John next time you see him and be sure and tell him my name. It's Rob by the way. "

Actually, I was ok with most of it until you said "Otherwise, keep your head down, your mouth shut and do your job. Now bag up my fish, please I need to get going." The kid was probably assuming (which we all learn from experience that this is not such a good reaction) that most people who enter the store are not hobby oriented, and are rather impulse oriented and thought he needed to keep things along the lines for the safety of the fish... even if his opinion of the stocking was false. That's stilll better than the employee who will sell you 3 betta's, a goldfish and a pleco for your 10 gallon tank all in the same purchase.

I'm having a rough day..... forgive the scatter....

Good point. I suppose you are right, maybe I should have thanked him for the advice and walked. But then, I wouldnt have my tetras and he'd still be thinking that tetras cant go in a tank with rainbows. But...they can. And do...Oddly enough. But you're right. I COULD have been wrong and full of myself. But I wasnt. So that theory doesnt apply.

Doll, thanks thats what I was looking for. I think it should have been a conversation too. I was a little harsh with him, but I did appoligize at the end there. He was rather rude though with the "Pick something else" I think thats what really set me up for the rant looking back on it.

I think that the kid had his heart in the right place. He obviouly knows a little about fishkeeping. What he should have done though, was say that he didn't really believe that those fish should go together and when you corrected him, he should have just bagged your fish and kept quiet. That's my opinion anyway.
