i just got an automatic timer for my light, i leave on for about 11 hours for my plants but i notice that when i get home late at night my fishes seem really stressed out, i'm thinking because it is pitch black dark in my rooom or something becuase once i turn on the light back again they seem normal again.

I don't think the fish need the lights at all. Like you said, the lights are more for your plants. Maybe the stress is from when you turn the lights on AFTER it has been pitch black ? I don't have tanks in my bedroom, but my lights are on over my tanks for 8-10 hours a day, then I either turn on the moon lights or shut the lights off completely. I don't think the fish care. If not for the plants, you could really go with no lights. Good luck.

i would have some kind of light, it's natural for them to have light in the wild, some form would be good. I notice that all my fish lose their color when the lights turn on and off, it does stress them out since its a big difference.

Fish do 'sleep'. I use that term loosely because I don't think they ever actually sleep like we do. But, they tend to shut down. In the morning when I turn the lights on in my tank they are all dull or washed out and they aren't very active. After a couple minutes their colors come back and they return to normal activity level.

I run my lights for 14 hours for my plants and leave a nightlight on in the room at night. I notice the fish tend to congregate near the nightlight end of the tank.

this is what pretty much happens with my fish. i'm sure it be fine i guess :O thanks again

if you are worried bout lack of light get a night light in the room.

I do this for my breeders when I want to keep babies.

as far as the fish needing light..
I would venture to say they do.. at least in some form.
most of our fish are small and in nature would probably stick close to cover. so their light may be somewhat subdued.

all things in this world need light less they evolved without it in that case the things that they would got from the lights comes in different forms. we our selves need light to get vitamin D which helps with alot of things so i would never go with a no light setup. i dont think they need 11 houurs even the plants dont need that much i shoot for 8-9 hours and then i have a moon light on the display tank and my breeders get my comuter lights at night.
