Fish or fishes? *grin*

both are gramatically correct to use in the plural.
 
Well I think we should take a poll. hehehe.

I vote for fish and fishes could be used interchangeably for the plural of the word fish no matter what the use is. :)

Which is what is known as common usage, which will eventually become proper usage. At some point, "orderves" will become a proper spelling.
 
The way in which it was taught to me, and the way every ichthyologist that I know uses it, is as monkey_toes already explained it:
Fish is the plural used when referring to a single species. Fishes is the plural used when referring to multiple species:
It's not something that's up for debate.



"Fishies", on the other hand...do with it what you will (just don't use it around my fishes).
