im getting a 55 gal hex tank (from a friends dad :)) and i was wondering could i keep a Volitan Lionfish and a Snowflake Eel. would the eel eat the lionfish or the lion eat the eel
thanx -kyle

The Eel should be fine in a hex tank of 55g but the lion will way outgrow that size tank. They need at LEAST a tank of 125g when adult. Picture a basketball floating in the water and that is what they are like. A dwarf would fit though so look into the Dwarf Zebras, Fuzzy, and Fu Manchu's. Hope this helps.

Live Aquaria's tank sizes aren't completely right. They're a good general starting point, but they tend to be too small for many of the larger fish and they never list a fish as needing less than 30 gallons, even when that fish could live healthily in 10.

Volitans can reach sizes approaching 18" in diameter and here is Robert Fenner's comment on them and space:
Other than overfeeding with too much, too soon goldfish, this is the second deadly area where aquarists fail with their lions. Lionfishes, for all their apparent slow-moving, calm breathing, seemingly low metabolic lifestyles need space. Room to move, sites to hide/feel comfortable in, volume of water to provide adequate oxygen, dilution of their, at times, copious wastes.

Basically, they need about 40 gallons of space to themselves in a larger tank, so yes you could keep one in 50 gallons with no other fish, but I wouldn't count on it reaching full size or living to it's full age, because either there wouldn't be enough hiding spaces or it wouldn't actually have 40 gallons of useable space. Another of the main problems is that they generate a lot of waste that you have to clean up, because any cleaning critters in you tank are popcorn. The larger the tank, the less severe the problem is. The most common cause of death is actually overfeeding them, though.

With a hex, space is very different than a rectangle, so you should be able to keep the lion in a lower gallons hex, because the tank is going to provide room to turn around, which is why I'd never keep one in less than a 75-90 rectangle. They need a tank 2' wide as adults.

thanx ben ill go with a smaller lionfish (dwarf) would that be ok with a snowflake eel?

In my opinion, I would say yes. But, it all depends on the fish...each one does have a different personality.

If you go with a Fuzzy Dwarf Lion, which grow to around 7", you'll be fine with a Snowflake, which are pretty non-aggressive, with fish larger than their mouths.

Snowflake eels can get up to 2' in length, so in the future, you may want to think about upgrading your tank. The last thing you want is a fish that cant grow to it's adult healthy size because of space limitations.

The only problem that I see is the amount of live rock you're going to need for both. You must have at least enough live rock for the eel to hide its entire body, and the Fuzzy Lion requires the same...both like to feel "secure" and hidden away when they want to be.

For this to happen, you're going to need alot of live rock and that's going to be a pain, expecially with a hex tank. If you decide to give it a shot, I would suggest stacking up the rock in the middle of the tank as much as possible with many wide openings and hidey-holes.

Also eels are VERY strong due to all the muscle movments needed for them to swim, so they can easily lift up the aquarum lid and slide out or can crawl out through openings in the top, so it has to be completely coverd and secure.
