I came home yesterday and my purple stripe gudgeon was all clamped finned and swimming stiffly. he was scared and barely ate. One of his fins had some fin rot and a gray spot, kind of like fungus. It got worse through the evening. I put kanacyn in there(how ever you spell it)
This morning more fish were sick. My female rainbow was kind swimming at an angle and she has some grayish stuff on her skin. The males are breathing fast and they are listless. The gudgeon was in the corner hanging, I thought he was dead but he quickly swam away. A couple of fish were unaffected, a chromide, female sword, neon rainbow and plec. This tank has never-ending problems. I am devistated because the gudgeon is my favorite fish and if he dies I'll totally loose it. I don't know what to do

Have you tested your water for the usual suspects?

I think it might be columnaris

Just from reading stuff, I think this could be it. I am at such a loss as what to do and I really need some advice.
I thought of changing 50 % of the water and adding more salt and leaving the fish that don't act real sick in the tank and then setting up a hospital tank and putting the real sick fish in there. I think only a couple of fish aren't affected. I don't want to poison them with meds either but I know they need something. This gudgeon is my baby. I trained him to eat right out of my hand.

sorry, I'm panicing

last I checked ammonia was 0. nitrate was .5. nitrite was 0. However I didn't do a test in a couple of weeks..I've been doing a 30% water change every week. At this time I clean out the filter (filstar xp2 canister). I drain out the yucky water and rinse one filter basket of medium in the aquarium water I syphoned out. there are 2 baskets. Recently I cleaned all the hoses because they were filled with some very disgusting stuff. Last week I didn't empty the yucky water from the canister..
I also got one new little fish a little over a week ago. I did put her in the tank with no quarentine. She came from a very reputable LFS.
This happened suddenly, In the morning they were fine, in the evening they were sick. Same as last time.

1. A nitrate reading of point 5 is not a credible figure. Do a nitrate test and give us the real range. Making up figures isn't helpful. There could be a clue there.

2. The fact that the new fish was little and the LFS was very reputable are less important than knowing the condition now of the new fish? Healthy? A week or ten days' time is a very familiar interval for symptoms to show.

3. Symptoms like these don't bloom between a.m. and p.m. A closer watch over your fishes would be wise.

4. There seems to be a lot of filter detritus collecting. Where is it coming from. Are plants decaying? If there aren't plants, it has to come from food. What other source could be producing detritus like that? You may be overfeeding.

5. If this episode is same as last time, apply what you learned last time.

This is not the Newbie Forum.

Something which is likely contributing...Your specs state this tank 'has lots of salt.' How much is lots? Adding salt without knowing the specific gravity is careless and likely to cause problems.

You also have a mix of fish that do best in widely varying water conditions. Seems likely that they are stressed, and so prone to infections, which then spread to other fish.

I agree with wetmanNY--seems like something you are doing is causing these problems. None of my tanks, including those that are overstocked for whatever reason, have nasty detritus build up in the filters, nor is disease rampant.

alright then

I was just trying to remember because I was at work and panicing. the nitrate was 5.0 . not .5.0
The salt I added was about 8 tablespoons per 37 gallons. I add between 4 and 8 every time I change the water. it never regesiter on the hydrometer as being any salt in the water at all.
The reading stays at 1.000. I've tested periodically and this is what comes up.
aI wasn't looking for a fight. just trying to find some answers and some help
I woun't post any more here, that's ok. I'm just going to get rid of all my tanks and never have to worry about this **** h again.
