Fish sucked up into power filter????

yeh it is unusual that they would even swim close to the filter because generally i notice them staying away from it. I did turn down the filter considerably though. It was set in the middle now it is more toward the lower end.

Not trying to hijack your thread but...
Once, I had a canister filter inlet cover fall off and my betta got a little too curious and was sucked up. Two days later I found him alive in the canister! I'm sure he didn't think it was as funny as I did but who cares? Bettas have a funny sense of humor anyway. :D

If you're running an AC, and the fish was found on top of the foam; then it sounds to me like the intake tube may not be the route of escape. A fish sucked into the intake of an AC could not make it on top of the foam. My guess is he jumped/swam up the flow of the output.

I had a small platty kinda pulled through my outer filter, it was sick already though I believe. I've had to turn my filter down though so a perfectly healthy betta could escape.

I just use a sponge meant for Aquaclear 200, cut a slit into the center lengthwise with scissors, being careful not to go all the way through to the other end. I shove the sponge over the intake to my canister and it stops my guppy fry from getting sucked up. I have hundreds of fry and not a single one gets sucked up. When the sponge looks dirty, I unplug the filter, slip off the sponge and rinse it in aquarium water and then put it back on again. Great for a little extra bio and mechanical filtration.

I have used a piece of a old fry net and rubber band. I put it over the intake in my baby tank. Someone told me i could have used a new womens nylon piece cut to size too..

I tried the nylon and elastic band and it was terrible. The nylon is too fine for water to flow though well and gets clogged too quickly.

The filter strainer is the slotted cover over the tip of your filter intake. Almost every filter comes with one. Take it out and squeeze it a little. If it is flexible, try getting a little bit of fishing line and tieing it tightly in the middle. It will squeeze the slits together and make them smaller, yet still allow a lot of water to pass through.

I had to do this after the kuhli in my avatar decided to take a swim up the filter intake. He was fine, but had a nice gash to show for his experience.
