yeh i need to figure out something because the other fish got sucked up in the filter last night. Luckily the other one made it as well. Seems to be doing well. Im afraid that if I put a net around the filter intake it will decrease the amount of waste and food that can pass through therefor increasing my cycle time. Maybe each fish had to take a test run up the filter and it wont happen again to either.

The only disadvantage of a prefilter is you have to clean it of large debrees every once in a while. But the fine stuff like food and poop will break down and pass the filter. While a leaf or hair or something will just get stuck to it. Taking it off and pulling off that crud will make it like new again.
