looking for a community fish that is bright in the colors of red, orange or yellow, i thought of swordtails, but i thought that they were semi-aggresive?

thanks

Hi,

What about Platies, Honey Gouramis, Serpae Tetras, Big-Spot Rasboras, Salmon-Red Rainbowfish, and some varieties of Mollies. Those are some that come to mind first.

There are some really bright red/yellow/orange strains of platies out there now. They are also a pretty chilled out fish (but they do jump). My sister breeds platies and her male is like fire engine red, really pretty fellow. Here's a pic.

Yeah, Platies can be found in a virety of bright colors. I like Sunset Platies.

i'm not sure what size tank you want it for but, you could try a fire red gourami (might go by another name) they are bright deep red-orange, also most swords are deep dark orange, theres also the red rainbow but he may get big and i dont know what size tank you reffering to, also some red tuxedo guppies would look nice, gold dust mollies are very cool yellow....i could go on ;) heres some pics :

I'll throw in another vote for platies - the neon orange and sunburst varieties are a nice bright orange to orange-red. They are gregarious community fish, friendly and hardy. You'd want either all females or a ratio of 1 male to every 3 females as the males are quite focused on breeding the females constantly.

There are also some nicely colored mollys (check out the mollys at petsolutions.com). I have a pair of yellow/gold Cremecicle mollys (had 3 but one passed away leaving a very gregarious male with one PG female who's about tired of his amorous intentions!). I also have some black Dalmation lyretail mollys - but the Red Dalmation is a beauty who I will eventually add to the tank. But the advice about 2 to 3 females per male... TRUE! My threesome of Cremecicles were fine till female #1 died, then poor female #2 has gotten WAY more attention than she wants. But all said, the mollys are a really fun fish, peaceful, showy, and have loads of babies (livebearers of course). You'll find the right ones... just like I'm still looking for the next tank with some "mild mannered", colorful, breeders in the cichlid category (and of course more tank mates). Good luck!
