Help! My largest yellow tail damsel has had his tail eaten (IMO). He is just hanging out in a bottom corner. Is there any hope for him or should I euthanize now?

150 FOWLR
1 Bi-color Angel
1 Lemonpeel Angel
1 Regal Tang-super tiny
1 Coral Hogfish
3 Yellow-tail damsels.
Multiple crabs-2 very large-being given to LFS on Monday
50-60 snails in various forms
2-3" live sand

Current water parameters:
SG-1.024
Ammonia, trites, 0
trates-.5
ph 8.4

Thanks for any advice.

Do you know who was the aggressor? Without removing the aggressor, the damsel might be in for future attacks--at a guess, the other damsels may be the culprit.

Depending on how severe the damage is, the tail may grow back. If the entire thing, down to the caudul peduncle (that part between the tail and the body) is damaged or gone, the fish likely won't recover. If the damage is less, severe, and conditions are good, it should. My blue damsel lost most of his tail when he had to be quarantined with a trigger, but within a month of them being separated, it was returning, and now you can't see any sign of the injury.

Even if he doesn't make a complete recovery, as long as there is no infection, the wound should close and the fish will live. Damsels will leanr quickly to manuever with other fins. This one might be a bit slower but will be fine.

My only idea on an agressor is one of the 2 large hermits (shells were fist sized-female fist) I took to the LFS this AM. They gave me $20 in credit! Suckers! These things are mean!
These fish have been together for over 12 months-along with the hermits. I am hoping it was the hermits.

His entire tail-to the body is gone. I am going out of town for 3 days, so I think I may euthanize him to prevent him from dying while I am gone and causing a bigger issue. :sad

Thanks for your help. These forums are superb!

Dang !!!!

20 bucks for a couple of large hermits..
How about I send you a few and you can trade them to the LFS pick yourself out something cool and get me a frag or two for my troubles.. LOL....
I live close to the gulf and pull up large hermits all the time while "crabbing" for blue crabs .... I also find big ones as the tide goes out int he tide pools...
I used about 20 of them to strip my live rock of hair algea about a month ago and returned them just about a week ago...becuase the lfs told me they where worthless....

My LFS don't give credit for crap.... they wont trade either... they stink....
