Fishkeeping in a RV...

Tank cleaning week has begun! Of course no true former Submarine Sailor can complete such a task without a small tot in honor of good ol' Neptune, whilst carrying out such duties! I prefer Sailor Jerry's Rum, but... Ok enough of that for now.

55 African Tank Done. 30% water change complete and will take readings tomorrow.

Which tank did I clean again???? OH! Yes!

55 Gallon African. I also traded my Biocube 29 for a Fluval FX/5 yesterday. FX/5 has been running in a freshwater setup for past six months, so previous owner was kind enough to keep the water in the cansiter for me while we swapped goods.

Had it setup on the 55 and running in no time. I think I have it adjusted well enough to were it's strong enough flow to turn the water over in the tank several times an hour, yet slow enough to where it's not messing with the fishy kids. So we'll see how that goes throughout the day.

Anyway. Tank chemistries:

55 Gallon Community: Ph 7.4, Ammonia=0 Nitrites=0 Nitrates=15

55 Gallon African: Ph 8.0 Ammonia=0 Nitrites=0 Nitrates= 5-10

Parrot Tank: Ph 7.4 Ammonia=0 Nitrites=0 Nitrates=0

Cleaned the "Officers Quarters," The 5'er, and the "Guest House" last night. Tonight water change on Parrot Tank and 55 Community.

Your tanks all look terrific and the fish look healthy and happy! Cute kitty too!!! I like where the kitty's perch is....nice view from there! LOL! Welcome aboard here, you won't find anyone calling people names here or ridiculing them. We have a prison out back for those bad boys!:D
Best to the Mrs. for a full and quick recovery!

Nice pictures! But... under "Fishy Kids", I definitely saw something equine and something feline, LOL!

So on the tank with the white swoops - is that supposed to be something resembling dither fish? I know diddly about cichlids, so this may be totally off, but it did make me wonder.

And yikes - that Opaline Gourami sounds like quite a terror!

Welcome to Aquaria Central, and thanks for posting all those pictures. That is really neat that you can take your tanks on the road. I don't think I'd have the mettle to do that!

Best wishes to you and your Mrs. I have friends and neighbors who are breast cancer survivors - the prognosis gets better each year as we learn more! May she have a speedy and thorough recovery!

-Jane

Thank you Debi and Jane! Thank you for your kind words! I relay all the words of encouragement to my Mrs.

We don't have kids, so the Fishy-kids and four-leggeds are the babies of our family.
1 Mellow Yellow Lab
1 Crazy Border Collie
1 Bengal Kitty
1 Quarter Horse (I say 1/4 horse the rest mule)
1 Paint Horse
1 Appy
PLENTY of Fishy kids!

The paint scheme on the African tank is what came on it when I picked it up from a Craigslist advert. I traded a seldom used Sony PSP and some games for it.

The Community 55 I traded for also. It already had fish in it but hadn't been cleaned in about 2+ months. It was a work in progress for the first month or two. And yes, I was a VERY nervous Fishy kid Dad trying to get that tank up to par. I thought sure as heck i'd lose every one of them a couple of times. But they hung in there for me, and I was able to stabilize their tank back to the side of being healthy.

The 30 Gallon I bought from a local LFS on consignment. I'm kicking myself for letting them talk me into using a UGF. The water clouds up with no warning, and the nitrites spike up every now and then. I'm so untrusting of it that I put two marineland 400 series powerheads on the towers, as well as a Penguin 150 AND an Aquaclear 50. So when I can, i'm going to ditch the UGF in favor of a Fluval 405, and keep the Aquaclear 50 on it as well.

I had a Penguin 350 on the African tank, and I figured with the current amount of fish in there I was pushing my luck with it. So, I had advertised my Biocube 29 for trade on CL. Last night a nice gentleman became the proud owner of the Biocube, and I hooked up a 6 month old Fluval FX/5 to my African tank. I'm still dialing it in as far as suction and discharge but i'm loving it. I moved the Penguin 350 to the Community tank where it resides next to another Penguin 350.

Very cool extreme fish-keeping you have there! I'd like to sell everything to hit the road and it is nice to see you can do that with fish! Hittin' the open road is not a reality just yet as hubby is still working ! I am also a cancer survivor so I am praying that all goes well for your wife. All that yechy life saving treatment is just a distant memory now :thm: and it shall stay that way!! Keep the pictures coming!!
