I'm about to start fishless cycling a new tank (while fishy cycling the current one). I just read a web article that suggests adding activated carbon at the end of establishing cycling to eradicate any nasties that maybe came in with the ammonia. Good advice or not?

That got me thinking - should I leave the bag of activated carbon in my filter while I do my fishless cycle or would I be better replacing it with a bag of noodles to increase the surface area for the precious bacteria?

You can add all the surface area you want, but it won't get you more bacteria. The bacteria are are function of the bio load.

I run carbon all the time, cycling or not.

^^--^^ Agree 110%
