Fishless Cycling Using Raw Shrimp

I definitely want to learn more about this.

I don't have access to 100% ammonia, and I don't want to use loads of fish food. The idea of just sticking a piece of shrimp in a pantyhose and just leaving it in the water appeals to me for its ease.
That is exactly how I cycled my first tank. It is the set it and forget approach. I have never used ammonia. When you can just toss in the shrimp, and test the water from time to time to see where you are at,why would you want to add ammonia and test daily to make sure you have added enough?
Very easy way to cycle at tank IME.

Yup. I actually stuck a raw shrimp in a zip loc bag perforated with a fork :p: and hung it in the water. No mess at all to clean up. I wasn't keen on working with ammonia, and the shrimp method just sounded easier (we always have shrimp in the freezer).

I used raw squid to aid the cycle in my SW tank.
