Fishy Surgery or Euthanize?

Please lets not hijack this thread with the different methods of euthanizing fish. If you would like to debate the differing opinions on this matter, please create a new thread.

Thank You,

Well I euthanized the most humane way i know. This is from the research i not only did on here but from other sources such as Animal Planet.

I did the lower the temp gradually method since i was told that this is the best way to do it and the fish should not feel pain.

Essentially you just add the fish to a container or bowl, cover it, and stick it in the freezer for 30 minutes. This will in turn activate all fishes instinctual response to cold weather. When the weather gets too cold for fish to be comfortable, they go to the bottom of a lake, river, or stream where they will hide. As the temp continues to drop they go into a "dormant" mode which is similar to hibernation. At this point they are effectively asleep and their vitals drop to near nothing. Once the temp falls below minimun threshold the heart finally stops.

This method of death is very similar to a human dying of exposure to the cold. You go to sleep and you never wake up.

Firstly freezing them restricts the blood vessels causing great pain before death. Secondly i had jaw problems with Blitzkreig he swam into wood and cut it and it was deformed. He would swim away from food. I was really worried and expected he would die and couldnt find it in me to put him down. As i turned the tank lights off on christmas eve and prayed for him ( not that religous though) and on christmas day as a treat i put in a cube of frozen brineshrimp and prase the lord! He came swiming out from behind the filter and gobbled up half the cube. Its a Christmas miracle.

Wow, talk about a mouthful. Don't make him feel worse about what he had to do, and bisides which, it sounds like he knows how it goes down a wee bit better then you do. Not everything relates to "Blitzkreig".

Sorry for hijacking the thread.

I had to euthanize a neon the other day, and I did it the same way you did after a lot of thought (and reading). He was really suffering, and I had no qualms at all about putting him in the freezer, and have no regrets. I don't believe it caused him great pain, or at least that he was aware of it at that point.

I'm sorry that your surgery didn't work, but at least you did all you could for the little fella.

Freezing is NOT a recommended method by the AVMA.

However, neither is clove oil.

Decapitation is :dive2:
