Fishy with Fin Rot :(

I test the water every couple of weeks or so. I clean the tank fully cuz I haven't really found a gravel vacuum that seems good. Any suggestions on one? Oh goodness lol I didn't even realize I was doing a mini cycle. Wow I love this website you guys are such a great help I really appreciate it :) fishys fins don't seem to be deteriorating much anymore. I've taken out all the decor and the gravel and shrimps and im gonna start daily water changes. I did leave him his little plant that he likes to sleep on tho hehe

How much is that medicated food and where can I buy it. Fishy would eat everything If he could choose his food lol whenever I feed him he literally attacks his food so im sure hell have no problem with this

You know what works really well on finrot in Pimafix and Melafix. The cool thing about them is that they do not disturb the cycle in your tank. As a matter of fact, I just treated a case of mouth fungus with them and it cured it in 5 days. I am a BIG believer in the product line. I can't say enough about them. I gave them to my neighbor girl last week to use on her Betta and it has cured her Betta's fin rot as well. Because it is all natural it is not quite as harsh as other medications either. The best way to use them is to mix the two of them together. One fights bacterial issues and the other one fungal issues. Like I said, can't say enough good things about them.

Melafix/Pimafix products have a lot of fans, but some people with bettas are leery of possible damage to the labyrinth organ so I believe using them at 1/2 strength would be recommended for Fishy. (In fact, there's a product called Bettafix that is just a less concentrated version of one of the two ... Melafix, I think.) FYI, they are more like antisceptics than medications so are helpful at cleaning up minor problems but can't cure serious illness. If Fishy's problem is water quality, then using these products with daily water changes could do the trick — and, like Wendy pointed out, won't hurt filter bacteria, so all decor, gravel, etc. can go back into the tank (to start rebuilding that bacterial colony).

Janet, you should be able to vacuum the gravel with any old siphon, just stick the end of it deep into the into the gravel during water changes to draw out the gunk when you're removing water from the tank. You can vacuum just part of the gravel with each WC, a different section each week.

BTW, I sort of love that you call your fish Fishy. I have a male betta boy that I keep calling Betta Boy. He's liable to get stuck with that as his name unless I have a sudden genius name-the-fish moment in the near future ... which is not so very likely.

There has been an on-going debate on labrynth fish and Pima and Melafix this is true. You have to do what you feel best doing after researching the situation. I can only go by MY EXPERIENCE. I personally have had no problems with Pima and Melafix and labrynth fish and have had no friends that have had issues. I do know of people that claim they have (I personally believe that it was long term bad water quality and not the product... ). In the end you have to do what you feel is best.

I think I will try the melafix with his daily water changes... Hmmmm so it's that east to clean the gravel. Well alright seems good to me :) lol yeah I wad calling him fishy for weeks before I decided that would be his permanent name. I just couldn't come up with a perfect name for him especially since he was brought to me in a vase with no food no supplies and with no warning at 2 am with me knowing nothing about fish at all lol

Its a crazy story but thanks to that I finally found the hobby I was always looking for :) lol im sure betta boy is gna be his permanent name. Its always gna be the first thing you call them but its always perfect. as for sand or gravel. Which one do you guys prefer? I've only used gravel but was thinking about Switching to sand. What would be the prod and cons about that?
