I found a 150 gallon tank that has a cracked back piece of glass. The glass is 45.25 X 21 X .5. Is there a way to fix this without replaceing the glass? I found a piece for $120 but I would rather not pay that much.

Any advice on this?
Thanks
Chris

with a tank fo that size, the only way to truly fix the glass would be to replace the pane. pressures would be too great for just a silicone bead.

If you dont mind the looks I would use some tinted plexy glass or clear if you want or if you can find a sheet of solid black your choice. Then cut it to fit the entire inside of the tank demesions of the broken piece of glass. Spread silicone over the entire sheet of plexy and then glue it to the inside of the broken piece of glass. I hope that makes sence. And it sould be plenty strong depending on how bad the damaged piece of glass is.

I have fixed cracked bottoms by simply putting another piece of glass over the crack, from the inside. Sealant on the edges and along the crack. The "patch" doesn't even have to be the full size of the original pane, although I would use a full size patch for a back.

For a cracked back panel, I'd replace it. Just wouldn't feel comfortable with a patch.

I would definately replace the whole back pane. For the cost of the tank so far (free) it would better to be safe. There is a lot of pressure on glass. It still amazes me how silicone even holds it all together.

With my plexy glass idea I didn't mean a patch. Remove all the silicone from the inside serface of the broken piece. Then cut the plexy pannel to the exact size demensions of the inside of the tank. Then compleetly adhere the pannel to the broken panel to create a doubble thick pannel which should be very strong. Then reseal the inside of the tank around the new panel. I have not tried this yet but I just got a 33H (or tall whatever) with a fairly badly broken bottem and plan on doing the same thing to it. I will post the process and results when I start.

Also with your tack if you can find a pice of solit black it would probably look very good and will not need a background.
