I may have a couple suggestion that may help.

Have you tried making a pile of rocks where the pods can hide but the fish cant get in. If you take a series of smaller rocks and make a nice little pile in a corner of the tank you can create a nice safe place for pods and other little creatures.

Another thing that you may want to try is a sump with some LR. Basically what I am suggesting in both of these is a place with a safe haven for the pods.

If thats all he's eating and your population is suffering you either need to find an alternative food that he will eat or give him what he wants... You can by pods online and if you setup another tank maybe you can breed them and suppliment the population when nessacary.

JMO...

The "pod pile" idea is a good one. An extension of that is the put a plastic salad strainer over the pile to further protect the pods inside. Macroalgae can also provide a safe zone. Probably the best option is to create a refugium in your sump away from any predators at all. Keep the flow down, put in some macro and LR rubble and you'll be on your way to a pod population explosion.

This is not a good source of nutrition but, it might stimulate his appetite if you'll feed other more nutritionally complete foods at the same time. Anyway try live brine shrimp sometime ," usually with wild caught fish", you can use them to get him started.
any way good luck.
P.S.
Did your fish store know where he came from is he acting funny breathing heavy or is ther anything else strange going on?
