flame angel n reef

My experience with fish that may nip at corals is that some individuals will and some individuals won't, it can vary greatly. I haven't kept a Flame Angel (Centropyge loriculus I assume) but I have kept a Coral Beauty Angel (Centropyge bispinosus) and it only very rarely nipped at the corals.

Maybe flames are known for nipping at those particular corals, someone with experience with one may know, but I do know some people have kept flames in a reef with no problems and others have not. I guess if your real attached to you corals I wouldn't risk it.

My experience with Flames is pretty much on par with most dwarf angels.. about 75% will be good in a reef and 25% will nip at corals.. unfortunately no way to tell which is which. The worst offender IMO is the Coral Beauty angel for nipping, my experience is about 30-40% are safe, but the majority seem to nip. Still can get one that is good like TropicalNorth has, but it is just less likely than most other dwarf angels.

Fascinating... I had always heard that the coral beauty (along with the flame) was a pretty safe bet in a reef as compared to some other centropyge species. Then again, that was just what I had read so I'm much more interested in personal experience. ;) The lemonpeel has a pretty bad reputation from what I understand... what are your experiences with those?

Oh ya.. always forget that one because it isn't as common, but yes, lemonpeel angels are definately one I wouldn't consider reef safe.. really, with that one I have seen 1 out of a dozen or so that turned out reef safe, so less than 10% on lemonpeels. Same goes for the golden angel, it is more of a deep water dwarf angel and doesn't usually hang around corals, so when you put them in with corals they don't really know what they are and have to nip at them to find out.

Ya, I always used to hear that Coral Beauty/Flames are just about identical in personality.. then I started working at a LFS and got to see first hand, and deal with many returns, of coral beauty angels that turned out to not be reef safe. The 6 line wrasse was definately the most returned fish I have seen due to aggressiveness (A damsel would be #1 if people returned them, but from what I hear from customers, about 90-95% flush the damsel instead of return it which isn't something I like to hear since this hobby and wellbeing of fish and corals is my passion in life, but I don't preach to customers about it), but the coral beauty was definately 2nd on the most returned fish because of the coral nipping.
