You ARE overdue! Well, they're not growing as fast as I had hoped, and I'm not really sure why. I think it may be because I'm not feeding them a diet rich enough in protein. So I'm trying out some different foods to see which gives me the best growth rate. I want to put them out on our deck in a big tub for optimum growth and color development, but now that Spring has arrived, the patio gets much too hot for them without floating plants of some sort, and more water = more filtration... I just don't have the time or money to set up another big tank! :[
They were definitely just a random scoop of fry since I got them so small. I started out with about 18 and we're down to 12 - the 6 that died were clearly deformed or just failed to grow. I still have quite a few with deformities. A couple of kinked spines, a few curled gill plates, and a swayback in the bunch. But I'm raising them all to at least the 2 or 3 inch size so I can clearly see those with the most potential before I cull any.
The two midnights I bought both turned out to be males, and since my black comet turned out to be a hybrid, I'm a little short on pairs right now! So I'm hoping that this batch of babies will provide me with a female. There are quite a few totally normal babies in the batch and I'm holding out hope for a girl among them.
Being shubunkins, they start showing colors super early. I already see some that will have good color. Very exciting!
More good news on the baby front is that my haustrums have finally started breeding! I've noticed that they lay very few clutches and the clutches have a high infertility rate. Out of a whole clutch I only had two babies! But the two are now BB size and growing like WEEDS!
I'll try to take some photos soon... I know everyone loves baby pictures!
