Is there an aquarium plant (preferably 'grassy' like sag, or java fern, or vals) that when it reaches the water level, will be fine with the 'leaves' floating on the surface? does that make sense? basically, I want some thing that will root in the substrate, or on a piece of driftwood, that will grow up to the surface and have the part of the leaves that are above where the leaves break the surface be like floating plants, but attached... I still don't know if I conveyed my desire properly... hopefully y'all can figure it out. Thank you. BTW, i've never kept any of the plants I mentioned, only seen pics... they might be perfect, IDK.

lol... top is covered. I want something that will have the upper part float, both for a shaded area, and to provide support for gourami bubble nest. If I didn't have cats, I would do one of those 'overflow tanks' where the water spills over all four sides and into a catch below, and have lilys covering it... but alas, I have three incredibly smart, stubborn cats.

A lot of plants will grow up and out of the water, hygros, ludwigias.......usually the leaf form is different looking than the underwater form.

Most all aquarium plants in the trade are easily grown outside of a tank in soil.

Most stem plants will grow to the surface and just float at the top usually because the stems can't support them to grow out of the water. Once dense enough some of the plants will grow immersed from the floating plants. Some of the grass ones have already been listed but these also will do what you described Myriophyllum mattogrossense, Myriophyllum pinnatum (Green Foxtail)
