Hello, I haven't been around for a while, mostly because my tanks are in fairly
good shape. :)

Anywho I was at the LFS the other day browsing around, and I saw some floating water lettuce, I thought this would be a cool thing to get for my 5 gallon, as I already have some fake floating water lettuce in there for my newt to crawl out onto, Is the real stuff hard to care for? Is it worth getting some? I know it would hold the wieght of my newt because I pushed on it with my finger.

#2 I was thinking, when I need to change my filter sponge, how is one to go about it? Should I cut the old sponge in half and do the same with the new one and put both pieces in this way, so I always have the bacteria in there?
If I were to do this with a new tank, would the cycling go faster? It's just a theory I had that seemed cool and wasn't sure if it had or can be done.

#3 I'm looking to get two or three snails for my 15 gallon tank, is there any species that's perticularly good at eating brown algea? I seem to be having a problem with that, any other solutions to the brown algea would be pretty sweet, as I hate snails  :( but I think they are my only chance. I took out all my stuff, rinsed off the algea, let it sit for 2 or 3 minutes in javexy water, and rinsed it off countlless times until I couldn't smell the Javex anymore. I was hoping for a snail that stayed fairly small, and isn't to big and gross, snails are the only animal I have a problem with, feed me worms, but I'll never touch a snail :thud:

And now the conclusion of my Essay. Thanks for reading through my rambles, any help would be appreciated ^_____^

Water Lettuce needs lots of light. And because your tank is very small the WPG rule can not be used, So you would really need a huge light for the tank. IMO its not worth it, if you want plants; get low light ones.

When I change a HOB filter I normaly cut it in half just in case. Then put in the new media any way you can fit it in. This is to make sure that there is some bacteria still letf there. Yes adding some "seeded" (used) filter meida will help a cycle. It adds the bacteria need, and more or less takes away the growning process of it. (A few weeks) But you still need to cycle your tank no matter what. (Even if its a mini cycle)

Snails I have no clue. But for brown alage there is a way to clean it. Oto Cats, or a Pleco. For a 15g get two Oto cats. Mine will eat it and then keep on looking for more. However you still have to find out why you are getting it. Is your tank a new set up?

I have two small pl*co's in my 15 gallon tank right now. They don't touch the brown algea, they seem picky. I know they'll get huge, but right now i'm sort of growing them for a friend to put into his 55 gallon. I also have a chinese algea eater in there, it doesn't touch it either. It's already pretty big but it still eats algea and isn't being aggressive, and hasnt grown much in the past couple of months.

Alrighty, so that rules out live water lettuce. Cool. thanks alot! :D

Hi I'm a newbie to all this sort of stuff however..... i use CO2 (fermentation) and have a fairly densley planted tank (mostly low light plants). I have heard that a combination of real plants and Amano Shrimp can control algae

my tank is fully cycled and I have never spotted any algae and all my shrimp are fatties!

just my .02
