Okay, I picked up a couple of Flag Fish recently to help to contain my beard algae problem.

My question is this: Do these fish tend to prefer slow moving water?

The reason I'm asking this is because they seem to hide a lot in a "low flow" area and they don't really come out. I know that they tend to be shy fish, but I just want to rule out the possibility that my water flow is too high.

I have a 20gal long *Heavily* planted tank with 2 Florida Flag Fish and 3 Otos.

All water specs are fine. No ammonia, no nitrites, very low nitrates yada yada yada.

Thanks in advance,
IndianaSam

Oh yeah, don't even suggest flushing them Ozark Joe! :p

How long have they been in your tank? I would suspect they are still getting used to things and will eventually come out of hiding. Also, many fish feel safe with things like tetras in the tank because the tetras give them a feeling of security (if they are out and not getting attacked than it must be safe to come out). So it may take them time to get used to everything before they become too trusting without the tetras (or similiar).

I think you should take those flag fish and fluhhh.....fluhh.....ffff....

My understanding is that they come from slow-moving waters, so that would make sense that they stay in an area of the tank that is calmer, and out of the "jet stream" so to speak. Same way as my bettas do.

However, I've not seen the shyness in the ones I've kept in the past, in fact, mine were pretty bold, more like mollies. I'd guess you're correct about the slow water thing. Glad to hear you have a heavily planted tank for them. Gives them lots of hidey space and cuts down on the current a bit. Gotta love them live planted tanks, man.
