Flourish Excel Dose for 5.5G

Another Update

Ok, my Asian Ambuia seems to be perking up and the Tiger lotus is good. My crypt is still melting - but I a can wait (really I can).

However, the vals are doing HORRIBLE. They have not yet grown while the other plants have. My guess is because I am only dosing Excel.

If your CO2 tank is close by, you can add your two 5.5's to it very simply, by using a couple of brass(I use plastic) 'T's to split off and a $6 needle valve for each tank.
How do you disperse the CO2 into those tanks? Do you have a reactor or something??? If you can help with this - most likely I WILL go this route - seems much easier. Plus it will make me more confident because I am so familiar with pressurized CO2.

As for overdosing, my tiger nerite snails go to the top first when my dosing gets high and if I really push it the fish go to the top. As an example in my 37 gallon tank (about 30g water) snails go up at 2 capfuls/day and fish go up at any higher than that. I keep it a little lower and everyone seems happy.
Well none of my fish are near the top and snails do not survive one day in here  (hehe the puffers eat them). SO I think I am ok on this. Hopefully - at least for the overdosing.

Thanks so much

I put a 'T' in the line coming out of the 20# tank. Then run one line to each tank. Next to each 5.5 put a needle valve in the line and run the line into your filter or whatever reactor you're using. In my case I use an in-tank cannister in my ten and an AC Mini in my 5.5.
Clippard valves cost between $5 - $7 apiece.

Stephanie reports poor results from her Vals. using Excel. I haven't had those results, but I only use a bit of it in my 55's. If yours are sensitive to Excel, that could be the cause of them looking so poorly.

I will attemp to split off CO2 gas asap to get my vals looking good - for the first time.

Thanks Len for the ideas!!!! I will put it into my AC20 Power Filter I guess and see how that works.

Thanks Stefanie for the clue in on Excel and Vals- grrr on them (both the Vals and Excel for being incompatible)

Thanks to all else who placed their thoughts in here

This is quite strange because I have used Excel along with compressed CO2 on my 75g. I've got 4 different val types in there and have never seen bad reactions. I admit that Excel is not a regular thing, but there was a time when I had a nasty outbreak of BBA and I was overdosing Excel for a few weeks. Vals can become a bit invasive if left unmanaged. My jungle val can send runners under 18 inches of driftwood which gets annoying. Maybe Seachem are playing it safe. They do seem to have a knockout product and they know it.

I think that is the key. If used alone, Excel may not be incompatible with Vals. Since CO2 gas is present in your tank, the vals just utilize that - not the Excel.

Maybe vals can not use Excel - which is why they do so poorly in Excel only tanks. It may not be the case where Excel hutrs vals, just vals cant use Excel. Can someone else verify this???

From the research I have done seachem states that some plants are structually too similar to algae... they can not market excel as an effective algaecide, but it definitely has an effect on algae and thus on "similar" plants... well, I am not a biologist, so I am not sure what they mean, but this is the answer that was given to the question...
