I noticed that the Flourish root tabs have all the same "ingredients" as flourish in liquid form.
Would it be OK just to inject some of the liquid into sand right by the root of the plant?
or do tabs give plants more than liquid can?

:iagree:

Like medicine in a swallow-able tablet form, more time released then chew-ables and liquid syrups.

If done fairly regularly, and your substrate is not too shallow, injecting liquid mixes can be quite beneficial for heavy root feeders (and a lot cheaper than tabs). I do it, though not as often as when I had a sword.

cool Squawkbert. how would I go about it? what doses?

Personally, I do a "EI-Light" dosing scheme (there's more on EI and other methods at APC, if not here. APC also has the handy-dandy Fertilator tool.

I premix liquids made from dry stuff available at http://www.bestaquariumregulator.com/index.htm so that I'm adding the Fertilator suggested amounts (or a bit less) to my tank on a weekly basis. My liquid mixes are setup so that I get what I want by adding about 5mL of each (CSM+B, CaCl2 in one mix, KCl, KNO3, KH2PO4, MgSO4*7H2O in the other) daily. When I had a sword plant, I'd pump at least half of a day's mix into the substrate around the base of it once or twice a week.
