I currently have a 55 gallon FOWLR that will be making a slow transition to a reef tank. At this stage I adding a fairly large sump/refugium to the set up. Everything is almost finalized, except I am stuck on plumbing.

I was initially thinking of plumbing the return from the sump to a series of jets via PVC, however I don't think there will be sufficient return flow to really give much power behind the jets.

I've been looking at these wave maker devices, has anyone had success with these? Is it basically a power head with randomized directional input? Is there a brand anyone suggests over another?

I rushed into setting up the FOWLR about 4 years ago, and since then have been lucky. I don't want to rush moving into a reef setup, and would like to have the optimum setup by the time I start investing serious money in the livestock.

Thanks for any input :)

Certainly agree there, there wont be enough pressure to effectivly jet the water from the return..Personaly, i dont like the wave devices, and prefer the good old powerhead...something line Koralia...couple of them and your good to go...These are good because they provide a good dispersed flow over the aquarium....

Just an opinion

I like those Koralias, they look fairly compact, which I like. Any suggestions on how the flow should be set up? I was thinking some kind of figure 8 pattern would be ok. Thoughts?

Personally, I like the whole closed loop thing. Run an external pump, some plumbing and i personally went with the SCWD (Squid) wavemaker. It's got some doo-dads inside and just t's the line and gives a few seconds to each of my outputs. I got tired of powerheads, and wanted to do the wave thing.

What do you have for flow right now? Just the return from your sump?

Right now I have 2 powerheads, one in the front and one in the back aiming in the opposite corner. The sump hasn't been installed yet.

Can you provide any more details about the closed looped system?
