Flower pots

I've noticed that many fishkeepers have flower pots in their tanks, presumably for hiding spots for their fish. Flower pots are generally made from terra cotta and are orangey in color. On a recent trip to the craft store, I saw some flower pots. Next to the flower pots were colored ceramic pots. Would these pots be safe as well? Does anyone know if the ceramic materials would contaminate the water?? I want what is best for my tank. I just thought that the ceramic looked more decorative...

I use the standard clay flower pots in my tanks with no problems, but I'm not to sure about the colored ones.

The ones you saw, were they glazed or painted for the coloring? IMHO I would be very leary of using them because of not knowing what was used for the coloring.

They were definately glazed, so I know they were also definately fired and not just painted.

I use large black ceramic mugs as caves
in my convict tank, the fish love them and
spawn in them regularly.
I have had no problems with them
and they certainly look the part.

Has anyone else used a coffee mug? The material I am talking about is exactly like a colored coffee mug.

I have used a coffee mug that was glazed and had my wife's name on it. I used it in a 15g that I had setup for her in the kitchen. I never had a problem.

I guess my initial question could have been phrased a bit clearer had I just said coffee mug, but at least now I know! Thanks for all the info!
