Really... no reason they should cost more than a guppy...
They are so easy to breed... they definately aren't rare...
In Singapore... they usually cost a thousand dollars...
why? because the people here think that the fish is 'lucky'... and the more expensive they are.. the luckier.
Here are some links to a Singaporean forums... go check out what we think of flowerhorns.
btw we refer to them as luohans... or LHs...
this...
and... this...
and this..
Some are a little weird... Singaporean... *shrug*
1k Sing Dollar = RM 2k approx. yes..........that's the average price for a 1ft fish with average markings, the nicer ones will go much much higher. (someone's selling a 3" LH at 700 USD atm, as of now.)
and Tristan is absolutely correct that it's not rare.
however the HIGHLY PRICED LHs are those who have nice markings, and those are rare. a typical LH reminds me of a Firemouth. well.......color wise.
another good reason why it's highly priced is that it's good money, considering that superstitious people are willing to pay anything to "shoo" away bad omen / luck.
and since it's rare(in terms of fancy marking, coloring and shape) and it brings luck, imagine what people are willing to pay.
in fact the name LH is name after some thing related to Buddhism which i don't understand.
and if not mistaken i was the shape of the rounded head resembles some chinese deity that brings prosperity or something.
in short : making big money out of superstitious and religious people.
btw. bring a Trimac over and it's really possible that you can sell them for quite some cash.
