After doing some maintenence on my filters, I have noticed that the AC110 mech filter media is much more soiled then the flulval. The media in the AC110 is brown, wheres only a very small portion of the 404 is starting to look a little soiled.

The flow is fine on the flulval, so I'm wondering if the design, or the media itself is to blame?

AC is on one side of tank, with the intake about midway between the top and bottom of the tank. The flulval is on the other side of the tank, with the intake about 4 inches lower then the AC. My output of the flulval may be createing a current that is pushing the particulate matter away from the intake but I'm not sure . Anyone have experience with this?

that is probably your bacterial colonies

they are brown and it can take a while for them to get growing your 110 most likely got the right bacterial exposure sooner or has more oxgenated water some how.

don't worry-

BTW if your colonies aren't established fully you should clean it less frequently

That makes sense, but why one before the other? I can't see either having more oxyngenated then the other. The intake of my flulval is right next to the heater, maybe that is the cause? (You can see it in the pic in my sig.)

the discrepancy could easily be a matter of chance

bacteria get in your tank by randomly landing there (unless you intentionally add then in some way)

so in all likelyhood they got to your AC first that's all- no problem, they'll both colonize eventually
