maybe slightly but why not if you can get one for a good deal. plus if you haven't had one before this would give you experience with it.
No. It may mess with the water a bit. If that happens, just reduce the amount of water going into the intake with a sponge.
you can't have too much filtration, just too strong a current. if the water is churning too much, try to diffuse the force comming out of the outlet pipe by bouncing the outflow of the wall/heater/piece or driftwood etc.
im not sure about the 104's but i know that the 204, 304 and 404 have a valve on it called the "aqua stop" that allows you to control the flow. if need be you can turn this down a little bit. however, the directions specifially say not to turn down the "aqua stop" more than half way during operation... if the 104 has this feature, then there is your solution. if not, then totally disregard this post. heh
