Fluval 305 or Rena XP2?

When I got my first Fluval 405, I set it up, got it running, and then had to put my hand under the stand right next to it and even then had to touch it to make sure it was on, that's how quiet it is.

I have not used the Renas so I can't say how bad they are. I have seen the layout for the media trays and they seem more complicated than they need to be. I would still use a hang on back filter, especially if you already have it. My water is much clearer when i set up my Fluvals they way I do now. The bioload can be increased with more filtration. The fish also seem to have fewer problems when more filtration including a canister is on the tank. My cousin had a large bioload in a 90 and he hates canisters, so he did not have one. It got to the point where the tank's chemistry basically collapsed and almost everything died. I strongly believe that if he had at least one Fluval 405 and did bigger and more frequent water changes, he would not have had this problem.

Well, what I can do is take the XP2 back, get the XP3 for a little bit more, and get a new hang on filter power filter - which one do you recommend? I have a top fin system and it is very noisy. It rattles, sounds bad, and simply is a pain to clean. Anyone recommend a good hang on power filter as well(that I can get at Petsmart)?

I went with the Tetra Rena XP3, an aquaclear 50, and a Top Fin 10. Seems to be MUCH quieter than the other setup. Should this be enough filtration? I should not have to change filters for quite some time.

The next thing is I guess I need to buy the foam bits that can go in the XP3 correct? Why did they not come with the system to begin with? What do you suggest I put in that middle filter area that has nothing right now?

definetly get the rena xp3, its amazing and the flow is great, i had mine for 3 years and its wisper quiet, you cant hear it at all. so for the 15 doller differance you cant go wrong. as for the power filter i have two, the Penguin 350, and the Penguin 200 biowheels they are super easy to clean.
