Fluval 404 problem?

did you change filter media recently?
my 204 did that after changing filter media.
and it kinda sounds like a sealing issue. Did you do that whole *lubing up the rubber ring:eek:   *
cause if air is gettin in there then for sure that would be happening.
Odd question, you dont have any bubble makers near the input do you?

Same experience with my 404 here as well... seems to happen more when the media is dirty and waterflow gets restricted. I just wobble the cannister a few times and the air goes out... but sure enough I can shake out more air within a day. I've noticed that the height of the intake and outflow seem to change things, the higher up they are the less I notice air building up.

If I get the chance in the next week or two, I'll pickup a new o-ring and let you know if that helps.

Cheers,
Raithan O. Ellis

Welp, replacing the O-ring hasn't appeared to make a difference. The previous one was in good shape as well.

One thing I do recall with the Fluval, when I used peat ball media or peat in bags, I would tend to notice more bubbles. Perhaps it has something to do with organics breaking down, and the design of the system just happens to trap a tad more than other designs? Just a guess in the dark.

Best of luck!

I took mine apart and checked everything. All's good. O ring looked good too. Still doing it. Driving me nuts. :argh

I'm going to leave it for now. I want the bio to get going again.

Raithan, What do you have in each tray? I have the poreous rocks on the bottom (are these peat?), ceramic media in the 2nd, bio-sponges in the 3rd and floss in the top.

Interesting setup. On my Fluval 404 I have a 5 micron sponge on the bottom. Second level is generally left empty. Third and fourth level contain bio rings.

There 'must' be an air leak.
Canister filters are a 'closed' type system of filtration - the best - in my 'book' for freshwater tanks.

I can suggest you find out where air is leaking into the Fluval 404.

Is there an air pump near the intake of the Fluval 404?
I once had a UV Filter that threw some air bubbles out and one of my canister filters sucked up the air bubbles and started making noise.....

Hope you find the prob...
Hope I helped..

Well, after further review, It appears that it was the air bar. I have a 12 inch air bar, more for effects than anything. I decided to turn it off this morning and the bubbles are gone. Must have been just enough air in the water and being sucked in that it was causing the air to collect and expel every 15-20 minutes. I'm not so sure it's a done deal, I'm gonna keep and eye on it. I'll try turning it back on in the morning, and then we'll see if it starts up again.

I was goin to suggest and air leak on the intake, you discribed it just like my 304 with badly diffused CO2. I would also suggest moving your bio media above your filter floss. Bio media should get clean oxygen rich water.

Sometimes sponges trap air and it takes time for it to get out. It seems like one sponge finally lets go of its air but another picks it up.
