Fluval 404 vs Rena Filstar xP3

Spartan - If your filstar is a little noisy i have read and been told by a LFS that if you drill some more holes or larger holes in the outlet pipe (in the tank) then that can solve the problem
Nah, its not the whistling sound from the spray bar (i'm using the jet nozzles anyways). It the actual filter box. I guess you just have to buy eheims for silence.

For what its worth I have a Fluval 404. Its so quiet you could almost call it silent and it has a very easy to use priming pump. I wouldn't doubt that Eheims might be better but at a significant price increase.

i have both running on my tank. the filstar is a little noisier. the fluval is silent. both are apparently equal in their media setup options and media volumes. the rena offers more options out of the box as far as setup goes, and is easier and quicker to setup.

once they are running, i can't tell a difference other than a slight humming noise coming from the rena.

Hey Matt, I'm fairly new here too. I learn a lot by reading other's posts, and have learned to do the search. Sometimes even when you search you don't find exaactly what you're looking for.

I have developed a little understanding of the folk's frustration woth repeat posts after I've seen the umpteenth post relating to wanting to start a 10 gal tank with a betta. I want to , and I think everyone else does too!

Hi everyone!

Thought i would give you an update. I have just finished installing the Rena and found it very easy to do with lots of different options.
The 404 went wrong again and still could not find the problem so my decision was easy to change them.
The only small problem i believe the Reva has is the humming noise which is coming from the spray bar......although easy solvable by drilling the holes in the spray bar bigger or maybe more holes. It's a known problem with the spray bars (some have it, some don't...pot luck i guess!) Will give it a couple of days to make sure everything is working as it should before i start drilling.

Thanks to everyone for their help, really appreciated.
I now have a 404 spare for emergencies. Cool.

Matt
