My SAE died recently (long story, friend watching fish while I was away.... BIG mistake) and my LFS never carries them which is too bad because I love their look and personalities. They DO however often carry Flying Foxes which look very similar. Does anyone have any experience with these guys? Any firsthand info would be especially beneficial. Thanx!

flying foxes are siamese algae eaters. there are a few varieties of them but they are all very similar in every way

oh, interesting! I wasn't sure because mine only had one stripe and the Flying Foxes had I think two or three. Thanks for the info :)

Flying Foxes I hear can have a more aggressive personality. The one I have has been great. Has more personality than most of the fish I have. Mid level to bottom dwelling fish so he cleans up well. He hasn't been aggressive since the first day. I have read they do not react well to fish of their type. Meaning SAE or another Flying Fox. But I would recommend one.

i was recommended sae rather than the flying fox as it is a more peacefull fish, my one thinks he's a congo tetra as he swims with them all the time :dive2:

Flying foxes will get aggressive to other fish in the tank. Chasing them, etc. Theres nothing that compares to a true SAE. I have had both.

Agree, they are in no way the same fish, they only have a similar appearance. They don't really eat algae but really seem to like meaty foods (my guy does eat algae tablets). They are aggressive with fish that look similar but are generally fine with most other community fish (I have otos, cory cats and white cloud minnows). They are great if you like their look but they won't help with algae as I mentioned and are often skittish to onlookers (at least my guy seems to be). They generally get more colour in their finnage.

I acctually read a very informative article in TFH a couple months ago. I dont remeber all of it but basicly it said that the SAE is not really the amazeing fish that some people would make it out to be and they heavily compared it to the flying fox. Id does NOT eat brown diatom alge like some people clame. It also does not eat Hair alge. They disected them and obseved them and never found any evidence of them consumeing brown or hair alge. I do belive that in the end the finding showed that the flying fox acctually consumes more types of alge than the SAE. I do agree that the SAE is a bit more peacefull but that the flying fox is not that bad. It may have its moments but dont think its like a CAE or red tail shark. Unless you have very fragile species I think it would work out fine for you.
I will try to look up that article so that I can refrence it here.
