Food and cycling a tank for betta

Joel, I thought the platy had been in a smaller bowl or tank & 5g was new but I may have misunderstood... & well, the way Steve cleaned the heck out of everything every week or so I'm not sure how "established" it was especially after the death of his platy...

Steve, does the betta's current home have a filter on it? Joel is right, if it's been on the tank/bowl for a while it maybe cycled & you can just move it to the 5g & be good to go...unless you replaced the filter media recently or otherwise cleaned the tank heavily (it sounded to me like you may have). What do your test strips says about that tank? there should be 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite & say, 5-20ppm nitrate. (another cheapness hint: you can cut the strips in half the long way & get twice as many tests!)

What kind of filter do you have? Pics?

Do you have substrate in the smaller tank? That also has beneficial bacteria all over it, it doesn't get vacuumed out no matter how vigorously you do it. & even if you want a different kind in your 5g you can still use some of that old substrate to help cycle the new 5g. Use a part of panty hose (from $1 store or mart) or other porous media to contain some old substrate if it's different from the new tank's. Either add it to the filter if there's room or near the filter return, it can help seed you new tank. If you bleached the substrate after the platy's death, skip all this. I should have thought of these easy steps but I didn't, I'm sorry. This is another reason sites like AC can really help, extra eyes can see different things to help.

Steve, why do you want or need to clean your plants & ornaments so often? If there is an ornament that doesn't allow water to move through it (like a castle with turret without holes near the top) I'd either try to carefully! drill holes or remove it. Stagnant water is not good. A little "patina" can help soften the look of stark white ornaments & is another place for microfilm of good bacteria, microfauna etc to form. This is good thing & part of a healthy tank. If you must do it, do each on a different weeks, than back OR sides of the tank, not all at one go. Even once/month seems, well, like a lot to a slacker like me. I never clean the back glass, rocks or wood except to remove moss that has taken over (I'm on a many years long moss hate, lol).

Oh, & we love to see pics! They can also help us to help you, but really, we just like pics, lol.

Well, that makes things much easier. I am happy, and the betta is now very, very happy!

Joel, thanks for so much for posting and for mentioning the platys tank.

Fishorama, no need to apologize. I should have mentioned to you that I hadn't done anything to the platys tank, and I apologize for that. When he died, I obviously removed him from the tank and switched off the light. I hadn't gotten around to emptying the tank, cleaning it, etc. My plan was to give the platys tank to a friend. I picked up the betta and a new tank on the day the platy died. Also, Fishorama, you are half-right on the tanks. I did pick up a new 5 gallon tank for the betta. However, the platys tank is also a 5 gallon. In fact, it's identical to the new one I picked up. I decided to buy the new tank so my buddy could have the old one. I like to help out my friends.

I have put the betta in the more established old tank, to be safe. I did a water change, but didn't clean anything. I am also delighted to say that I hadn't replaced the filter cartridge in a month. The readings after the water change came back 0 ammonia, 0 nitrate and 0 nitrite. I obviously can't return the new tank to the store, but my friend said he would pay for it (bless him). I am also throwing in the gravel I picked up as well as 2 filter cartridges. So it's all good.

I won't bother cleaning the plants and ornaments like I used to. Thanks, I know now it's best not to. I will add a little more to the tank, perhaps another ornament or plant. I may even buy a live plant or 2. You will see from the photo that my tank is very dull and boring, not a lot in it. I also keep part of the bottom bare. My platy, in the last year of his life, ate only frozen blood worms. They would always float to the bottom before he had a chance to eat them. He was able to see them fine without the gravel.

Thanks so much Fishorama and Joel. I will post this and then send the photos.

I will also add a heater and thermometer to the tank. I didn't use a heater with the platy, but I know bettas prefer warmer temperatures.

Fishorama. I hope I did the right thing by putting the betta in the platy tank...

Instead of moving the gravel and filter over, I thought I'd just do a good water change. I thought I was doing the best thing.

Maybe I should have put the betta in the new tank, adding the old filter and old gravel?

I really hope you are ok with my decision.

Thanks so much for all of your help the past few days!!

That's a very colorful tank! St. Vincent is pretty & looks quite healthy. I feel much better that you didn't overly clean everything or wait long before adding your betta, she should be fine. I always assume the worst with relative newbies. I'm sorry I did that without asking more or noticing you've been on AC for 2+ years. It's surprising you don't see any nitrate...there may be some but at a lower level than the strips can test for.

Are there holes or gaps under the umbrella edges? They would be good.

Your filter looks ok & if you're worried about cleaning, it looks like you could slip an extra "media sleeve" over the blue insert thing. Then you can clean the old "sleeve" in running tap water alternately with the blue... if you understand what I mean. (Sorry again, cooking, watching, news, sports etc. while I type, my usual MO.)

Also are the plants plastic or "silk"? The points on the leaves might be sharp if plastic, watch for split fins. ;) live plants can't do that & would add a different color of green (nudge, nag, lol). A dark background (even part of a trash bag) will help hide the filter & cord. Try it out, the contrast with the wall color will help show off your fish more.

You're a generous friend! I too, prefer to give than sell when I feel like I can, or donate plants to my club for sale at another club. It's all good! Do you have a fish club near you? They can be a lot of fun even if you only go a few times once in a while.

Hi Fishorama! Thanks for your kind words. I think she is a pretty little girl! (I will post a close up photo). She is eating well and seems to enjoy her tank a lot. Suddenly her world got a lot larger. She swam at least an hour last evening at the back of her tank, from one end to the other, back and forth. I had forgotten how friendly bettas are. Don't get me wrong, I loved the 2 platys I had. But bettas are more friendly, they definitely look at and notice their owners more I think. I've had fish for 6 years, but still consider myself fairly new to fishkeeping. I joined AC the day I bought my platys. My first 2 fish were bettas. At one time my ex. and I had 5 bettas, each in their own 2 1/2 gallon tank. Of course, males can't be together. When we separated all 5 came with me. My ex. wife didn't mind, as the fish were more my thing anyway. I am happy with just 1 fish at a time now. I will likely just stick with bettas or platys, fish that are fairly easy to look after and can live in a 5 gallon tank.

The plants in my tank I got rid of. They were plastic, and the ends a little sharp. Last evening St. Vincent knocked one of them over. The last thing I want to see are split fins.I may also remove the ornament. There are some edges that are a little sharp. I was in Petsmart today and bought an ornament that I think is more safe. Also, you may be impressed, I have decided to go with live plants!! Yes, it's true! lol Anyway, I think I will pick up Anubias. They didn't have any left, but tomorrow is stock day so I'm planning to get some in the next few days. I will post photos once the tank is set up.

I am sure a fish club would be loads of fun! We have dog and cat clubs in my small Canadian city but no fish clubs that I know of. It is great that you are a member of one. I am sure in the SF Bay area there would be all kinds!

PS I noticed you mentioned watching sports. Great to see you are a sports fan. I love baseball, and many others, as you can see from my avatar! I just wish my Yankees had reached the World Series. Oh well, there is always next year!
