Food for Black Ghost Knifefish?

I just recently got a black ghost knife fish and am trying to figure out what would be the best food for him. I have read worms, etc. but I think I would need some kind of sinking worms or something because the other fish would eat it. Also, I have heard some eat flake food. Finally, would it be best to drop food in right before I got to bed since they are nocturnal? Any suggestions?

you could try feeding with tongs or a turkey baster to target feed. bloodworms defrosted sink, but blackworms are another good choice.
 
feeder fish are a great idea. . . . if you want to expose your knife to parasites, bacterial infections, and ich.

try shrimp pellets and bloodworms. using a turkey baster or a filter extension (if you have one laying around) will help get the worms past the other fish. feed at night for a while, but eventually once the knife settles in you can start feeding during the day and it will come out looking for food. they will gladly eat guppy fry, but it would be better to raise your own feeders rather than buying them from a store. one they get bigger red wigglers and other bait-type worms are good. they will learn to take them right from your fingers.
 
well chicken guy in the wild knife fish will eat feeder fish naturally and if you breed your own like me you will be fine.
 
Soooo, is you folks all prejudiced agin "regular" fish or are you just cheap SOB's and don't think any of your fish, except the black ghost, are worth the added expense of frozen and/or live foods? :lol:At least every other day I feed either frozen brine shrimp or blood worms while the light is on. The food is first thawed in warm water and then dumped in the aquarium in three different places, including one of the outlets from my filter, in order to assure good distrbution. Both the black ghost and the elephant nose get ample food - I had no idea a black ghost could get so fat each time you feed it! The aquarium is 30 inches deep and those two fish have both been in there for more than 6 months. I have found no good reason to plant the food in front of their noses in order to keep them from starving. They compete with the best of them. There are more than 90 other fish in the aquarium. The aquarium is wall to wall plants with several large pieces of driftwood and rocks to hide in and yet I can consistently find both the ghost and the elephant nose within 30 seconds of starting to look at the aquarium - even when all 850 watts of lighting are shining brightly. the key word with feeders is "raise your own" which most people don't have the space or time to do, but if you do more power to you :)
Generally I've just put some brine shrimp/bloodworms etc in a turkey baster and put it near the black ghost, especially at first when they haven't quite figured out the tank or are shy. i have yet to see a ghost eat flakes though, and until they are bigger you'll have problems finding feeders small enough (again, unless you breed them yourself)
 
My black ghost loves frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp which I use a turkey
baster to get the food to him. He also loves freeze dried tubifex worms,
they come in a cube and you stick it on the side of the aquarium. My ghost
stays hidden in a cave until he smells the food and then it doesn't matter
if its daylight or not. Just be sure he is really eating because I had one that
I could never get to eat anything and of course he died.

Whole Muscles. like the ones you buy for puffer fish. defrost them and hold them just in the water, he should come over and pull chunks off. If not pull the muscle into small chunks and drop it in next to him, he should take it.

i will take some pictures of how i feed my black ghost knife fish later if i have time

i also defrost blood worm, daphnia and spinach and poor it in the tank on his head then he open mouth and takes in lots of food at once
