Food-growing experiment (will it work?)

Less than a week ago, I bought five otos. Before getting them, I purposely grew a ton of algae in their tank-to-be (it sits in the south window) so they'd have a buffet. They're loving it, and it seems like their favorite thing to eat the algae from is these big pieces of sea glass (don't worry, no sharp edges). They've eaten away almost all of the built-up algae in under a week, even with supplementary food, so now I'm trying to figure out how to keep their buffet going. They like algae wafers and zucchini, but I want them to be able to graze like they've been doing. They're so fat and cute--they look like they each swallowed a marble!

I have a fish bowl and plenty of extra sea glass, but no extra filter. Would it be safe to grow algae on an empty piece of glass in a non-filtered bowl and then put it in for the otos to eat from?

I'm just paranoid that the stagnant water will breed the wrong kind of algae or some kind of parasite. I figured I better ask before I try it, just in case.

Parasites can only come from other infected hosts - either other fish, or an intermediate such as snails. I wouldn't worry about them. Pathogenic bacteria and protozoa are more of an issue, but again, the vast majority need to have come from an infected organism. I think it'd be pretty safe. Just change the water if it gets smelly.

I was just going to say that I think it's safe.

Now, I'll say "Yeah, what he said". lol

I asked at my LFS today as well, and they said the same thing as you guys. Cool!

Operation Oto Dinner Plate Switcharoo is go!

And I almost forgot... THANK YOU :)
