Foods besides "goldfish food" for goldies?

Yeah, they'll be getting gel food too. I like giving my fish a bit of variety - even if they can get everything they need from one food, it's gotta get pretty dull eating the same thing every meal. :)

hi ya ! there is something that you can feed then they love it, common garden earthworms,, wash then and chop them up watch your fish go wild i'm telling you ..... as long as you are not sqeamish ! enjoy

:yuck: :barf:
... you ain't gonna find me chopping up worms anytime soon. lol

Goldfish are primarily herbivores but do relish a bit of meat too.

Goldfish really enjoy Earthworms (as most fish do) and Red Worms from the bait store or bulk from the Bait Supplys (in the back of Fishing Magazines) is relished and usually do not have to be chopped up.

Almost any type vegetable you have is good for Goldfish and if you want to grind up (in the Blender) any type of Shellfish (shells and all, Shrimp are good) frozen in your Gel food with vegetables or plain by themselves is fine as a changeup.

Most of the flake foods that are readily available are not very good.

As a last comment, just in case you did not know, Use wet food to keep the floating fish syndrome (that Goldfish are subject to) down.

Sinking NLS pellets provide everything they need in a nice complete balance without any guesswork.

You know, I've tried feeding earthworms and at first the fish were really excited, but after a little mouthing, they ignored them. I think it may be that they were not raised on worms, so they're not sure that worms are food.
If you want to feed worms, start with something small like bloodworms and move up to the larger worms.

It could also depend on the type of worm. There is more than one type of earthworm. It could also have to do with live/still moving and dead.

Flaringshutter- Mazuri aquatic gel is what the pet store that I get most of my fish from actually feed all of their fish. They just started feeding this recently before that it was prepared flake foods. The fish go crazy for this gel food. Would be worth trying.

I've heard good things about Hikari Lionhead sinking pellets. I feed my comets all sorts of goodies that that are nearing the end of their stay in the crisper drawer...and pellets...and flakes(until they are finally gone).
