I'm planning a RCS and guppy tank, and I ordered some Hikari Fancy Guppy food for the guppies only to discover now that it has copper added to it (18mg/kg, FWIW). Should I avoid using this in a tank where I also want to house RCS? I know that the Hikari Shrimp Cuisine pellets also have trace amounts of copper added to them, and the folks at Hikari swear that they're safe...

Those of you who have community tanks with shrimp in them, what do you feed the fish? Did you look at the ingredients to make sure that it doesn't have copper? What do you recommend I feed my fancy guppies? I personally kind of hate working with flake foods, but if there is no alternative, then that's what I'll do...

Thanks in advance.

You should be fine to use the guppy food, the trace amounts of copper in that shouldn't effect your RCS...

I feed my RCS flake food from Kens. Also just a side note, your rcs will survive with guppys but they will not reproduce because the baby shrimp will be food for the fish.

Really? So is there some threshold level of copper that they can/can't tolerate? It just makes me nervous, since it seems like the common theory is that copper = bad, end of story.

Do you get the food online? Someone else (in a different thread) said that they feed their guppies flake food from Ken's, so I'm wondering where I might find it. (And what's so great about Ken's that everyone seems to use it?) I'll look around online.

And yes, I am aware that any shrimplets will be guppy food. It's unfortunate, but it's life. I don't know of any fish that won't eat shrimp fry. My tank will be fairly heavily planted, so I'm hoping a few will survive, but I'm not too optimistic. :headshake2:

Copper is a vital part of nutrition, even for inverts. Obviosuly it should not be very much, but is not just tolerable but essential.

I would feed both New Life Spectrum Thera+A and/or Golden Pearls.

Ken's food is good but my fish never touched his flakes and the worm pellets dissolve in a minute. For my red cherries, I find raw cocktail shrimp, canned green beans, and lettuce are their favorites.
