For those who think teachers are "over paid"......

You couldn't pay me enough to babysit. I'd teach for less!

It's not "have" and "have nots". No such thing. It's about the "want to's" and want not".

If kids had a say in how much income their parents/guardians made then yes that would be the case. However, when you have school A asking for more in tuition than school B while then attracting the better teachers and providing more resources...that leaves a portion of people already behind before they even have a chance.

Goes back to parents making sure they do it. My girls are seniors, ask them if I didn't ask every single day if they did any homework or projects. Yes they've lied and said they did but it shows on the progress report if they missed an assignment. If I see that they lose all privileges and make up the work at the kitchen table even if they won't get credit for it. Guess what, they make sure its done because they know they will have to do it anyway and they may as well get a grade for it.
I do the same with my 3rd grade son and will continue to do it. Now I admit I don't do PTA meetings or got involved with the school but I do make sure my kids do what is expected of them. If I can do it while in school I think it would be much easier from home when I can see what the assignments are before they even do them.

So you're saying that teachers should just give up on kids not willing to do the work?

not really. in az they have opened up charter schools. private schools which doesnt cost the parents money but they get funding from state or use of vouchers. a few of my younger cousins went though a charter school when they got to high school where it was no longer charter they were at a higher level then the others. its possible to do it in a way where its not the haves and the have nots.

I guess I wouldn't consider charter schools as "privatized" although they do not receive funding from the state. They are supposed to be non-profit by definition.

For a job that is so difficult and important (most of the people who complain about them being overpaid would never even dream of doing it) I just can't believe anyone gripes about what they get paid. In my county, the average starting salary is $33,000 a year. That is ridiculous for a job that requires a 4 year degree.

Sad, but in my field people need at least a Masters degree and starting salary is 28,000 with 12 months of work so it is hard for me to feel bad for teachers. But I definitely support teachers and admire their skills and patience.

The school I work at is a charter school, we do get money from the state. The difference is that we choose how to spend it rather than the school district (LAUSD) deciding how it's spent.

We can't charge students to attend here, we can't choose who can attend (other than discipline), there's no aspect of "private school" here, except that we determine our own spending.

what are your schools scores vs others in the area?

I've been in the class room and theirs NO amount of money they could pay me to teach. I would be in prison for slapping the little kids that wont be quiet and learn. Oh and just let one of them try to throw a chair at me and they would eat it so fast the parents would taste metal. JMOP

Our API has increased by 113 in since going charter in 2003. LAUSD highschools in the area average around 700 I think.

I think your teachers are the ones who make people think they deserve less money. God, if you want to argue that teachers deserve higher pay, the least you could do is punctuate and spell correctly.

I couldn't have said it better myself!

I came up with a few dozen stupid and rude comments to make as a reply for these, but I think I'll stick with the old fashioned but never useless "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all" Saying. Words to live by, right there. Seriously, there is no need to be rude, this is supposed to be a "friendly" forum, not a "grill people for their grammar issues" forum. I can go elsewhere for that.

Travis in a discussion about teacher competence, which was one point touched upon in the debate, the grammatical abilities of the teachers' students is a very valid subject of discussion. You provided a bit of comic relief in an otherwise very serious discussion. Thank you!

Really? I think you are reading way too much into this thread. Serious discussion? This is a fish forum.
You insulted a kid, and he called you on it. And he did it very well. Nice try at a comeback. But the kid just owned you.
